Nike: The Zine, Volumes 1 + 2

In celebration of new community store locations in Watts (Los Angeles) and the South Side (Chicago), Nike launched a magazine highlighting local artists, activists, athletes and entrepreneurs. This massive undertaking—and amazing team effort—resulted in two beautiful newsmagazines that honored Nike’s commitment to community.

As the sole writer on this project, my job was:

  • To work with an art director, Dylan Bannecke, and creative and Sony Studios director, Tyree Dillihay, to concept a theme and look/feel for each magazine that matched the flavor of the neighborhood.

  • Develop thought-provoking interview questions for each “muse” interview subject designed to help me craft a 1300-word profile of their life, art, and community ties.

  • Interview each muse remotely over Zoom, craft the profile, and receive client and muse approval. The happiest result? Several connections and personal friendships I got to form with interview subjects—and maybe the chance to collaborate in the future.

  • Ghostwrite for several pro athletes, including NBA star Anthony Davis.

  • Spotlight the muses while ensuring Nike brand values still came across in the publication.

This was my dream assignment, pulling from my roots in journalism and copywriting chops. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime project that left me invigorated and inspired. Check out some sample spreads on this page!
